In professional fields, regulatory bodies and codes of practice govern practitioners. However, individuals engaged in mystical work often learn independently, potentially leaving them in a grey area regarding public interaction. This ambiguity can create uncertainty for clients seeking a reliable source for a reading. Regardless of the divinatory art they practice, ethical principles should guide all practitioners.
Conversations with a group of astrologers made it clear that all readers grapple with similar challenges when clients seek advice: addressing difficult questions, potential tragic events, managing clients with depression or unmanageable issues, and most importantly, avoiding client dependency and the pressure it puts on the practitioner.
This article aims to discuss how readers and their clients can circumvent these issues. Firstly, it's essential to be clear about your motives. As a practitioner, I believe it's crucial to have a strong value system aligned with your spiritual perspective. As someone who has been through a vast religious and spiritual journey, I constantly question my motivation for this work. The immediate response would be to help others by sharing insights from readings, but it's more nuanced than that. The aim is to empower others to address their life problems more effectively by providing them with relevant information.
Encouraging clients to rely excessively on readings is morally questionable and possibly even unethical. Client dependency often stems from a simplistic understanding of divination. Clients may believe that a reading reveals an immutable fate, viewing themselves as puppets manipulated by greater forces. If their queries yield unfavorable answers, it can lead to significant stress and pressure on readers to provide more palatable responses. It's easy to overlook the emotional investment clients make in a reader's words and the caution needed when dealing with clients overwhelmed by life's challenges. Tarot cards reflect potential paths, trends, and opportunities at a given time, but they do not negate free will. Readers should help clients understand their choices and encourage them to take active roles in their lives. Different decisions lead to different outcomes. After all, who secures a new job or romance without making some effort? A valuable reading should offer strategies for achieving desired changes.
If you are a client looking for a reader who can give you real insight into your possibilities then you should be looking for someone who has the insight to explain things in this ethical way. At no time should you feel you have lost control of your choices. The purpose of divination is to seek guidance not intimidation. Both seers and clients need to adopt an exploratory frame of mind in a reading rather than a predictive one and clients should ask when they book a reading: "How do you work? Is there only one answer to a problem or am I free to explore the possibilities open to me?"
